I Hate Meetings!

This Is No Ordinary Meeting...

Meetings are often despised. People can think they are tedious and unproductive, convinced that no action will be taken from any ideas that are shared. Even the best ideas contain many flaws from the start. That doesn’t mean that they should be ignored. 


Someone else, usually a Balancer, points out its flaws as soon as it is born, and it dies. To be supported, an idea must have time to develop. Then, when the time is right, it can be chosen and improved upon. As a result, the cautious and wary Balancer can voice their concerns. In addition, the nimble-minded Creatives are given the opportunity to devise solutions that will address the issues and strengthen the concept beyond recognition.

So what's the purpose of this meet up?

'Collabz' is a team of assessed individuals coming together for a greater purpose. Among those goals is to build wealth, ethically and using win-win strategies. 

'Collabz' has a ton of benefits, here are a few to start:

  • Collaborate on new ideas and opportunities together

  • Use each other as a sounding board, 1-1 or as a group

  • Network. Tap into each others networks.

  • Utilise a range of compatible skills that fill your weaknesses

  • Learn from each other, build with each other.

Timing is everything. It's okay to make things, to imagine, and to dream. Ideas should initially receive only support. The sceptics shouldn't be able to express their anxieties until that has fully taken place. Your team won't have to talk itself out of its potential in this way.


1. Engage in constructive brainstorming.

The project gives everyone a chance to play. The entire group, with the exception of the Strategiser, spends ten minutes writing down all of their ideas for completing the task, assisting the client, or resolving the issue.


The next step is for each member of the group to share all of the concepts on their list. At this point, it is against the rules to be critical or negative. Statements that support or advance the concept are allowed from participants only.


2. Identifying the Method.

With the exception of the Strategist, everyone leaves the room once the list is finished. Priorities and practical solutions are particularly intuitive to the Strategist. Strategists are able to see brilliance.


They are naturally gifted at recognizing the hidden gems in various concepts and combining them to create something even greater. Ideas with the greatest promise and potential are chosen by the Strategist.


The remaining concepts are gathered and stored in an idea bank for subsequent brainstorming.


3. Find the Negatives.

Without the Creatives or Organisers present, the Balancer join the Strategists and are asked to use their strengths to disprove the concept.


By requesting, "Tell me everything that could go wrong with this idea," you grant the Balancer their greatest dream. In most cases, their well-intentioned apologies are met with hostility.


The Strategist hears from the Balancer about every issue they have with the concept. They then depart.


4. Solve the problems.

Now the Creatives join the Strategists in returning to the room. They are required to resolve these issues.


This step is repeated as many times as necessary for the Creatives to successfully resolve the Strategist consensus that the idea has removed all major flaws.

If you've never put together a meeting like this then there is a chance your a little nervous for wanting to make sure that everything goes well. You want to make the best impression for your 'Collabz' team after all.​

So below I have put together an outline that will help to at least give you a template to work to. This will evolve over time, as I'm sure this example will!

I appreciate that not everyone reading this will have a faith-led background, so please don't be offended by the example - simply tweak it to reflect your teams personal preferences. 

Remember, these are standard meetings. As you grow bigger collaborations together you will need to meet more often and in a more direct format.

  • Welcome - 5min

Introduce new people. A quick fire trivia quiz for 2 mins to wake people up. Explain the plan for today.

  • Pray - 5min

For wisdom in todays meeting. Give thanks for what you have. Honour God.

  • Share where you are on your own projects - 4min each / 20min (5 People)

    • Progress

    • Need help

    • Instant ideas/suggestions if requested

  • Round robin learning session - 10-15min

    • Rotate each person bi-weekly (whenever meeting)

    • Focus on a core business element that everyone could benefit from.

      • Marketing​

      • People

      • Technology etc

  • New/Existing collaborations as a team - 30min (5 People)

    • Progress

    • Financial results

    • Help needed

    • Instant ideas/suggestions

    • Planning for the coming week

  • Connect one on one where preferred - 10min

  • Close in prayer - 1min

The opportunity that your team offers you is something quite unlike any other. This is a chance to take ideas from the very beginning to a solid plans and into marketable opportunities at lightning speed.


These opportunities will be more finely tuned, better prepared and more likely to generate a profit given a better quality of input from like minded people.


However every team is different. Some will utilise the group more for the purposes of connection and for accountability. Others will take a deeper, more collaborative approach where they will build many new businesses together. 


It would be wrong for me to suggest that there is a right way to do this. The group is yours and not a cookie cutter version of a network meeting group. 


Personally I have always had issues with the majority of networking groups for the simple reason that AT&T you need to have already been there for 5 to 10 years before you can really benefit. In this day and age that's pretty unrealistic.


My sincere hope is that you will be able to use the tools from this and the previous pages to compile an incredible dream team that will achieve incredible success for you all together.


Entrepreneurs by nature are people that like to go ahead and get things done. This is not lost when you are part of a good team. The difference is that you no longer have to face every battle alone.
